I decided I needed a new black dress and I am so loving that twisted pleated action of McCalls 7429. I made two changes, I did not use the pattern piece for the neckline. I cut a two inch wide by 10 inch long piece of fabric. Inserted the piece in the neckline and folded it over and top stitched it down. I also decided to change the sleeve by making it somewhat of a bishop sleeve. I think that is what it's called. I do like the way it turned out. I am done with this pattern for now. As always, Happy Sewing.
It has been a long time since I've posted to my blog. Been sewing but quite busy working and doing other things. I have certainly missed posting and told myself that 2018 was going to be a more consisting blogging year, HA. We are almost done with 2018 and I have not been that active blogging. Hoping to change that with these last few weeks in the the year.

On the sewing front my latest make McCalls 7429.

I purchased this pattern when it was released and cut it out only a few months ago and put it down again. I was looking for something quick and easy to sew last night because I wanted a new dress to wear to church just because. The pattern was already prepped and all I needed was to lay it out, cut and sew. No buttons or zippers, another plus. I had a nice knit in my stash from 2014, purchased from Fabricmart.com. This fabric was perfect for this dress. The weight and stretch was perfect and the dress sewed up so nicely, pressed great and fit exactly as I wanted it to fit.

The pleats in the front of the dress gave me a little trouble until I checked YouTube. It finally made sense and came together with no problem at all. I certainly will make this dress again in another nice knit with different sleeves because I really like the pleats in the front. It very well may become a little black dress.

I think I am going to put some effort into the look of my blog by changing the format and look of it. Maybe then I will be more effective in blogging. Until then, Happy Sewing and hopefully I will blog more before the year ends.

I have been wanting to add some staple pieces to my personal wardrobe for quite some time now and this particular sew a long begins this weekend and I decided to join in. Thank Faye @Faye's Sewing Adventure for assisting me in adding more tops. I look forward to the challenge and can't wait to see how many I add to my wardrobe. The weather here is still quite cold, Spring seems to be taking forever to arrive and that is all I want to sew is Spring tops. Hopefully it won't be for naught.

Hope to post some pics real soon of the sew a long or anything else I make during the next couple of weeks.
Once completed, I fell in love with it. The way I envisioned it would look and fit is exactly what happened. I used the dress pattern of V8792 and the sleeves of M7627. Loved it. The fabric is a Ponte knit purchased in 2014 from fabricmart.com.
I already had the perfect jewelry and shoes.

I have been so busy since September of last year. I had wanted to post at least once a month but that did not happen as life happened. My goal in starting this blog was to post about my sewing and other crafty related items or whatever popped into my head. I will as with all things make an attempt to be more consistent in posting. It's not that I have not been sewing, I have, it's just that I have not had the time to post but have been reading other's posts. I suppose I could use some of that free time to post about my own pursuits and accomplishments. We'll see.

Every year I want to try the SWAP(sewing with a plan) but I never seem to complete it. This year I have decided to focus on some additions to my wardrobe that are needed and that I will wear on a continuous basis. Often times I sew for myself for specific occasions, not just because. I aim to change that approach as I am always finding that I need a garment for some reason or another and it is not readily available in my closet and I have to go to Plan B. I am really tired of that approach. I like to look and feel well put together all of the time so I have made an assessment of my wardrobe and found that I need to focus on specific items. I need some items in black, as it stands I have need of 2 LBD (little black dresses) 2 pair of black slacks, 2 button up black blouses and 2 black skirts.

I also have need of some solid garment pieces. I found last year I was drawn to prints all year long and that is basically what I sewed. I also want to add 2 white button ups as well as chambray and another solid color. These are all staple items for me but I feel the need for a couple of blazers and of course other solid color dresses.

I plan to make these items from fabrics I already own as I am trying to not purchase any additional fabric, #1 I don't need it, #2 I don't have any other place to store it and #3 I want to use what I already have and not continue to feed this fabric demon. It must be brought under control, as it stands I think I could sew everyday for a number of years and not run out of fabric.

My goal is to sew like I use to for myself and family so that I can decrease the stash and wear some garments that just plain make me happy. There was a time I enjoyed getting dressed, just because. Now I get dressed out of a need to whatever function I may be attending, work, in which I only wear jeans and a nice top, which by the way I don't have enough of. Such a shame, given that I could make them without that much effort.

Basically what I am saying is that I have been in a sewing rut as it pertains to my personal wardrobe. I have been sewing for others but not for me. That always makes me sad and it is very difficult for me to get out of that rut. But hopefully with somewhat of a plan in mind I will be able to climb out of this spot.

Happy Sewing to all in 2018. Hope to sew more for myself and post just as well.

She wanted a dress to wear to the Captain's dinner and of course turned to her mom(ME). I was thrilled as usual because I love to sew for her. She is a little demanding because she knows exactly what she wants and how she wants it to fit. I have no problem with that but sometimes we bump heads, all in all it always seems to turn out right and everyone is happy, including (ME).

She chose Vogue 1534, which I thought was a very beautiful dress that would look great on her frame. I had some lace printed fabric in my stash and purchased some taffeta for the bottom portion of the dress.

Here is my review.

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Pattern
Description: Vogue 1534, Halter neck pleated floor length dress. <span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Neue Helvetica W01", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Close-fitting through the bodice, lined dress has halter neckline, full skirt and contrast bodice.

Pattern Sizing: 6-22

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done
sewing with it? yes it did

Were the instructions easy to follow? I actually did not follow the instructions as they were not in the pattern that I purchased. The dress was simple enough for me to figure out without instructions.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the pattern as it was straightforward, no twists and turns.

Fabric used: for the bodice and waist I used a lace printed fabric I had in my stash and the skirt was made from a taffeta purchased from JoAnn's Fabrics. I used a lining that was already in my stash as well.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did not have to do any alterations, the only thing I changed was on the bodice I left the top portion unlined as my daughter wanted a sweetheart neckline to show through the lace.

Would you sew it again? I may sew the skirt portion again. Would you recommend it to others? Yes, it is a quick and easy pattern.

I moved a year ago to live with her and it has taken a great deal of adjustment but in the end I love it. She is smart, sweet, caring and a very hard worker. She is consistent and the best friend to all of her friends. We are not best friends because from my vantage point, parent's should not be your best friend. I am extremely happy to be her and her siblings mother. I would not have it any other way.

I love to sew for her and she wears what I make her so well. It is also a plus that she stands 5'9 in her bare feet and has long arms and legs. I have been a little busy sewing over the last two weeks, will be busy again starting tomorrow.

Here is the skirt I made and she is wearing it so nicely. I love the combination of the tulle and Ankara print that she combined for her look. The skirt was self drafted based upon her waist measurements and finished length. The tulle underskirt was made the same way minus the back zipper and pockets.
I actually have many patterns that were purchased as soon as they were released just sitting in my stash. But this pattern in particular has been on trend over a year maybe longer and is still holding pretty steady. It is the infamous bomber jacket that has been made up in various fabrics. I finally made mine and am very happy with it. Here is my review.

Pattern Sizing: XSSM-LXLXXL, I made the Large

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?Absolutely does.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Very simple to follow. If you are a newbie, the instructions to add the knit band around the bottom may be a little confusing.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I needed to make something rather quickly and this fit the bill for me.

Fabric used: I used Ankara wax print for the front and back pieces, a sweatshirt knit for the sleeves and ribbed knit for the collar and bands.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did not make any changes this time but for future makes I will add a lining.

Would you sew it again? Definitely making this again. Would you recommend it to others? Highly recommend it to others.

Conclusion: This jacket was quick and easy and true to size.

I have been sewing and posting to my Instagram. I had great intentions of making great posts but that fell by the wayside. Hopefully I can make up for the lack of posts before the year is done.

Here is one of my latest makes. I saw this particular cape on a friend at church over a year ago and knew I wanted one in my wardrobe. I begin making the strips necessary for the cape and that was as far as I got. Balled them up and placed them in a plastic bag and forgot about.

A year later and I am working on another project and I decided to pull out the bag with my strips and decided I needed to get her done. Well it took me a day to put all of the strips together, to make sure the cape draped around my shoulders and fell exactly where I wanted it and VOLA....finished.

I can't tell you how pleased I am that it is completed and I have already begin another one. But it is very time consuming to get it just right.

Check out the pics below and see what I am talking about. Happy Sewing during this National Sewing Month!
It does not feel as if it has been that long. Time just keeps on moving and if we are wise we will too as long as we have breath in our bodies. My mom was my first introduction to this world of sewing. She was an excellent seamstress and I always looked up to her. When I began to sew because of her influence, she was the bar to which I always tried to reach. If my sewing teacher in school said my project was an A, I did not rest until I took it home and my mother critiqued it. If she said it was good, then it was good. I certainly do miss her but I know she is as rest.

Happy 86th birthday Mom. You are loved and missed dearly.SD Cunni Designshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13232903845707401186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4474893422770146331.post-46857389986130362342016-12-24T18:23:00.000-08:002016-12-24T18:23:19.033-08:00Merry Christmas

As I sit here this Christmas Eve completing some garments for New Year's Eve, I reflect on the real reason for Christmas. My three children are all grown and I have 4 grandchildren that of course are expecting great things for Christmas but I am at the age where I am so grateful for being alive to experience whatever each day holds. I don't have any needs that have not been provided for, and the few wants if I wait a few minutes they become unimportant. I am so thankful for the gift of Jesus Christ to the world and his sacrifice so that all of us can enjoy so much. Thankful for living in a country where we have the freedom to choose what we believe in.

So for this Christmas I am simply grateful for the simple things of a loving family, health and strength, abilities and talents and for just another opportunity to show the real reason for the season and that is most definitely Jesus Christ.

Everyone enjoy your Christmas with family and friends and don't forget the reason for your celebration.

As always, Happy Sewing!!
It was 4 yards and cost me $3.98. You know I grabbed it and paid for it with no problem. I love finding bargains at thrift stores and I have found some of the nicest pieces of fabric in those places. This fabric is the perfect weight, it hung well and was not too hot. The temps begin around 58 but after church it was 78. The dress was perfect.

I use V1482 as my starting point. I liked the pocket detail on this dress and decided I wanted two pockets in the front instead of one. It was an easy fix to add to the front pattern piece what was needed and remove what was not needed for my vision. This pattern also runs big and is a little short for my taste. I cut the large but removed about 2 1/2 inches and added 3 inches to the length. I could have cut the medium and probably will next time as I want to make this in a black knit to wear with boots.

Here is the completed version:
Each time I want to make something for myself, in comes someone requesting something made for them. This is the case with my youngest daughter. Yesterday she saw a skirt I completed and decided she wanted the next one to be for her. I enjoy sewing for her because my garments look so good on her frame. She is 5'9 barefoot and everything looks good on her. So of course I made her the skirt she requested and of course it came out just as I envisioned. So she decided to get dress and take some pics for me on this beautiful fall day.
I needed to complete it so that I could get busy with my fall sewing. I have been eyeing all of the magazines and cannot wait to make some new items to add to my own closet. Since Fall is my most favorite time of the year, I don't know where I want to begin first, dresses, pants, suits, outerwear, etc, too many choices but I suppose I will just have to jump in head first.

A couple of weeks ago, I participated in a Flea Market/Car Wash. Had a wonderful time and made quite a few contacts. This patchwork skirt is a result of that car wash. Completed this lovely one for one of my new contacts. I am certain she will be happy with the result.

I like this skirt because there is no pattern, only measurements. I have made it three times now so it flows together with no problems. I originally made the skirt for myself and had never worn it. I decided to offer it in the flea market and it was a crowd pleaser. I will make it again for myself with a few additions I have been thinking about as of late.

Almost ready to begin my fall sewing. Ahh Fall, how I love thee, let me count the ways... LOL! It has been tremendously hot and humid this summer season so I am looking forward to my favorite time of the year.

Until next time, Happy Sewing!
It has been a couple of months since I last blogged, been a little busy. Well at the end of July I attended a milestone birthday party for a childhood friend. It was also sort of a mini reunion with other childhood friends. This year we will all turn 60 and I am excited to say the least. Thinking about getting older you have a tendency to reflect on what you wish you could have done better, but I say don't get stuck on what you could have done better, reflect, correct what you can and move forward.
Many changes have occurred and that is a good thing. I have been busy sewing for others including my youngest daughter. She is my perfect model and I am having a blast sewing for her. Here she is in New Look 6391, view D.
I really loved her many poses on the back deck of her new townhouse. She is doing great things at the ripe young age of 29 and I am so proud of her.
I like the fabric she chose which is one of Nicole Miller's designs at JoAnn Fabrics. The dress was so simple to make and she wears it well. She has become my new inspiration. This should help me clear some of my stash and help her add additional items to her walk in closet.
Nevertheless it is still a wonderful day. I have been quite busy doing a little of this and that. Blogging has certainly been on my mind but has been pushed to the bottom of the list of things to do. Trying to get better but stuff happens on a regular basis that always interfere.

There has been a great deal of sewing going on, mostly for others as well as many alterations. I have been teaching a number of people how to sew which has been very interesting as well as a number of fashion shows at high schools and colleges. Those events were great fun.

A number of positive things transitionally have occurred and will occur in the next couple of months and I am excited for that. Moving in April and looking forward to that. I have been living in this state for 34 years and am looking forward to the move as it is necessary and definitely time for a change. Change can be difficult but if handled correctly can do wonders for the soul. I am excited for this next chapter in my life.

I think I posted a while back about my love of African or Ankara prints as it called. I have a few pics of items that have recently been made from these prints. I am still in love with the prints and will always incorporate them into my wardrobe some way.

Love the way this jacket came out. I wanted to mimic the topper look that seems to be popular this season. It came out the way I envisioned, had to match the pattern in the fabric but that was pretty simple. Wish I had gotten a back view of the print as well. The pants were also made from a pretty print and I was able to match them the way I saw them in my mind. Very happy the way both translated into garments.
Have done two fashion shows and alterations for clients. I really just want to sew something for myself. Nothing to complicated or self drafted, just a plain old pattern from one of the Big 4 companies.

I sat down and looked at my stash of patterns as well as fabrics and decided I wanted to do something with a monotone look. After looking a quite a few patterns I made my choice.

The fabrics are a quilted knit for the skirt in a teal and light weight double knit in teal for the top. The double knit was purchased from Fabric.com a while ago and the quilted knit from Jomar Fabrics in Philadelphia September 2015. You might ask how I remember that date, it was part of a trip I took to Maryland, that led me to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and NYC for the US Open. A wonderful birthday weekend courtesy of my 3 children.

Now back to what I was posting about in the first place, fabric. As you can see from the pic below the fabric is quite pretty and I wanted something fall/winter but not black. I have been wearing a lot of black and wanted to add some color to the fall wardrobe.
I was asked to participate in a local fashion show in the city where I live. I did not know at first that the shows theme had to do with dogs but nevertheless I said yes. I did a fashion show for this same organization back in 2013 and of course I had forgotten that as well.

I had a number of pieces already made out of Ankara Fabric sitting in my studio waiting for someone to purchase or model at any rate I decided to continue with making the additional garments out of Ankara. I had only 5 days to complete the looks for 12 models. I must tell you I sewed from about 7:30 am until 1:00 am about 3 straight days. I completed the garments and the fittings, with 5 items being completed the morning of the show.

To say I was tired was an understatement. I am not as young as I used to be when I could sew all day and bounce right back with energy from I don't know where. I am still feeling it and the show was November 19, 2015.

I did not have the option of choosing my models, they were chosen by the show but these women were a joy to work with. They are various ages, sizes and ethnicities, which was great considering the expo caters to all women. I met most of them for the first time and had worked with two of them previously. I will definitely work with them again. It is so rewarding to meet people that you automatically bond with and began new friendships. I find that to be the case all the time in the sewing world. As I meet new clients and take on different projects I find myself meeting some wonderful people.

Enjoy the pics of the show. I really loved doing this.
I have made two dresses and a jacket for my granddaughter and three dresses for her mom. Currently working on Vogue 8780 out of a wool knit I purchased from Mood Fabrics sometime last year. I will complete that today.

I participated in Rochester, NY's version of fashion week on yesterday. I had some of my designs at a shop called California Closets and the shop was part of what is called the Boutique Crawl. This consists of different boutiques and shops that are visited by persons who purchases tickets and go from boutique to boutique to shop and hopefully shop for about 6 hours. We had a great time at the shop. I had two friends that modeled my wears for me and great fun was had by all. See the pic below. All items in the pic were designed and made be yours truly except the T shirt.

The temps are dropping here in western NY but they are very inconsistent. Yesterday begin in the 30's and we had snow flurries, currently it is 48 and expected to go up to 55. This is typical Rochester, NY weather. I am in the process of sewing some fall items and plan to continue to work on my own designs. Hope to post more pics soon.

As always, Happy Sewing.
Her coats are always impeccably done. It appears a great many sewists from all over are participating and I think it will be great fun.

I already have a number of fabrics to choose from but I have not yet made up my mind which piece of fabric or coat pattern I will use. I do know that I am certainly excited and looking forward to learning some new techniques. I will probably make up my mind this week which pattern and fabric and make sure I have all other notions that are needed so I can be good to go when the sew along begins.

This will hopefully be the challenge that I complete as I have been wanting to make a new coat for myself for a while. Living in upstate NY warm outerwear is a must. Hopefully this jump starts the sewing juices and helps me towards completion.

As always, Happy Sewing. Hope to post a pic of the fabric and pattern later this week.
